ABOUT US!!
Ed,
Families On Target Owner
Ed, (eic1515)
A bit about me. I enjoy all things outdoors and I really enjoy talking to folks about it. I'm Married to the wonderful CFO of Families On Target and we have a awesome kid. We have a strong faith in God and attend a local church. I have worked for almost 15 years in law enforcement and to borrow a term from the army ( it's not job but an adventure. WOW is it.) We both have very strong ties to the Quad City Area and we love to travel. Please for forgive me but I need to let you something more about me that may sound like boasting but I'm just setting the stage. "Shooting is what I love to do but its not who I am." I have been involved in the shooting community for almost 20 years. I have been a completive shooter for most of that time and hold a Master Classification in NRA (Bullseye) and High Master Classification for NRA(High Power Rifle). At the local level I have shot most of the guns sports out there, such as Police Practical Combat (PPC), Cowboy Action Shooting, International Practical Shooting Confederation (ISPC) and Small Bore (Olympic 3 Position Style) . Some history about me the late 1990's to mid 2000's I worked at ArmaLite Inc. in Geneseo, IL for Mark Westrom. I doing sales, customer service, worked on the assembly line as well as their custom shop. I owe most on my firearms knowledge to Jim and Steve Bartels former owners of Shorting Sports Unlimited who were great to me and treated me as a blood relative. Why did we started Families On Target ? With all that said about me, I think peoples' love for the outdoors is dyeing. I know its hard for families working 40 hours plus a week and a full time job at home to then want to get out and spend time outside (I'm there Too!) I have a strong desire to get NEW folks interested and involved in fishing, shooting, hunting and archery. This is why I started Families On target. So please take the family outdoors and have FUN. I promise you these will be the memories that will last a lifetime. Once again WE (me and the wife) want to thank you for looking at Families On Target and make sure you look at our FREE services, helpful links and useful tips.
Kelly,
Families On Target Co-Owner
I enjoy the outdoors. I'm not only a shooter but I'm an avid fisherman and enjoy backpacking as well. I love working with Mother Nature because I love to cook. I have grown many varieties if hops to make had crafted beer and I also have a side Business called Lees Creek Side Crops, growing unique garden crops to take to the local farmers markets.

Archived Tip of the Month !!!!!
Home Made Bow Target.
Use an Old Animal Food bag or
Farm Feed Sack (Kind with Waxy inside work best) FILL with Leaves, Leaves and more Leaves. Plastic grocery bags also can be used if you have a bunch at home. When sack is packed full you can then staple or tape ends shut and then use as blunt arrow target. Colored paper plates can be stapled or taped to the outside to add your own twist. Homemade targets can provide hours of cheap family fun, and a way great to practice for the Big Buck this fall.

I've talked to a lot of people who have asked if we could get them a specific caliber gun. Of course we can I reply. Then the conversation gets a little out in left field. For Example: I had someone ask if we could get a rifle in .45-70gov. sure are you going out west bear hunting? No, I'm getting tired of the ground squirrels digging up the yard. I then replied WHAT?! Now I'm. Sure a .45-70 will kill a ground squirrel, but why would you. It would be like elk hunting with a howitzer. What you are going to use a gunfor should be you first priority when you need to decide what caliber to acquire . With personal preference and price being a close 2nd and 3rd on your decision process. Here
are some guidelines that I use when someone asks what they should buy.
If you are just looking for a target gun, or pistol you can't go wrong with a 22 Long Rifle. I know ammo is not cheap anymore, and sometimes hard to find. But consider this if you are going
to bang through a couple hundred rounds in an afternoon a 22LR is still the best
value for your buck. Keeping with that thought if your target gun is going to
double as your small game rifle then any of the rimfire rifles would be great ( 22LR, 22WRM, 17HMR, and the exciting new 17 Super Magnum.)If this gun will be for a kid or someone less familiar with firearms conceder a single shot because they are very user friendly.
If varmints and small predators are more your speed. Then there is a wide verity of .22 centerfire rifles to choose from. From the easy shooting .204 to the hard hitting .22-250. Prairie
dogs and coyotes will quiver with fear.
Upland game hunters, trap shooters, and deer hunters alike can't go wrong with a trustee 12gauge or 20gauge. I don't recommend 410's for younger shooters starting out. Yes they
kick less, but they also pattern much smaller. A beginner may not hit the clay pigeons because they are getting 1/2 or maybe even 2/3rds smaller pattern. This will get the new shooter frustrated quickly and they may loose interest. A 20gauge is prefect for younger shooters, ladies and folks that do not care for a heavy recoil, but who want to still enjoy shooting.
Here in Illinois, hunting deer with a rifle is not allowed, but if you chase trophies out of state
the .30-30 has killed as much deer as any other caliber on the market with it's low recoil, accuracy, and low cost. The .30-06, .270, and .308 fall right in behind as being tried and true for North American game.
If you are in the market for a home defense weapon consider this. I tell everyone that the
sound of someone racking a pump shotgun will scare any intruder. If you are looking for something smaller consider a Taurus Judge or any other medium to big bore revolver such as a .357 magnum that will shoot .38's. the 9mm (9x19) also work great for home defense. 9mm semi auto handguns are very easy to shoot, accurate, and very low recoil.
These are just some very basic suggestions on how to start looking for the next gun at Families On Target. Please remember just because it might be fun doesn't mean you need a .338 lapua to go coyote hunting with. We hope you have enjoyed the Tip of the Month and you can go out and take the whole family to enjoy the outdoors.
